Calendars To Print, a cultural reference

Understanding the world from all angles...

How is a calendar going to empower women - can Michal answer that? The Calendars...

I inherited both a Christian and a European legacy. I owe a great deal to the leadership of both Julius Caesar and Pope Gregory. That doesn't mean I'm a slave to tradition. The Gregorian calendar is a great Christian calendar. As a civil calendar, there are a lot of things that can be improved. I provide this calendar wallpaper as a reminder that we can improve it together - and that we don't need to wait for a Pope to do it for us.Pointer

The art of the calendar is a neglected art form. I'm not talking about the design of a physical calendar that you can look at. I'm talking about the way we organize our days.

Consider the fact that the Romans assigned each hour of the day to a heavenly body. There was a Sun-hour followed by a Moon-hour. If the day began with a Sun-hour, it was a Sun-day. The privilege of naming a day went to the celestial body that showed up first.

For a while the Romans had an eight-day week rather than a seven-day week. It probably had to do with how long their groceries were supposed to last. People in the city had to know when fresh food from the country would be available - and it probably only came once a week. If supplies in the country were low, the week literally might get longer to stretch out those supplies.

The seven-day week was famously changed to a ten-day week during the French Revolution, a time when a lot of tradition was being replaced by standards considered more rational. The cycle of seven days, marked by a holy day or day of rest at its beginning or end, has nevertheless remained the most popular. In many cultures, an extra day of rest for laboring men has also become a common tradition.

What is not common across most cultures is a way of naming the days of the week. I use a calendar that names the days of the week not after planets or ancient gods, but after the seven pillars of cultures that I identify as the most basic philosophical distinctions of the human experience. I arrange them in a way that helps me to understand and explain the complicated cultural interactions of modern society.

You may not be prepared to adopt a different calendar as long as everybody around you is still using the one Pope Gregory reformed back in the 16th century. That's okay.

I'm offering you free calendar wallpaper so you can think about how important the calendar is as an art-form, not just as a way of counting the days but as a way of organizing our culture and giving our society a direction.

If you think society is heading in the wrong direction and needs a little help, you can try to celebrate Love Your Neighbor Day as I have done - by placing it between Saturday and Sunday - and seeing how you feel. You might feel power and freedom from having broken the cycle of Monday to Friday, Saturday, Sunday. I did. It empowered me and gave me a sense of peace that continues to fuel me to this day. Maybe it can fuel you too.

Europe, the summer of 2011. Twelve countries. 46 days. One car. One tent. One man. One woman he's just met.

As an artist inspired by a young woman's struggle with self-esteem and bulimia, body acceptance had always featured prominently in my aesthetic. Having recently discovered naturism and its mantra of body acceptance in the United States, I was eager to explore the style and philosophy of naturist clubs and the beauty of naturist campsites in Europe. By a trick of fate, I found myself first in Bielsko-Biała, Poland. Margo's home.

Being from America, all I had to do in Europe was turn on the radio to hear an American song. All I had to do was walk into a movie theater to see an American movie. To be understood all I had to do was speak English. Being from Poland, she couldn't stand listening to the radio for all the political nonsense being bandied about. She didn't like watching American movies because she claimed they all ended the same way. She didn't want to speak English with me because she not only wanted to say things correctly but she wanted to say them her way and nobody had ever succeeded in teaching her how. I desperately wanted to understand. She wanted to be understood.

There were times during our trip when I thought there might not be a happy ending. There were times when disaster was close and I wondered whether I hadn't made a mistake. I wondered whether fear, anger or sadness might triumph and one of us would have to finished the journey alone. Though I dangled from the cliffs of Normady I was saved. Though the lights went out I rode on. Though I ran the tires down to the wire I was okay. We drove home in one piece. We came home happy. We had started the process of learning how to listen and the sound of it was beautiful. We could be sure that we were ready to conquer the devils that abuse us no matter how long it would take.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Calendars To Print

The great thing about Acceptance calendar reform is the fact that I will never have to throw out another calendar again.

But until the world has adopted this beautiful reform, and incorporated the idea of peace and love into the way we measure time, we will continue to throw out calendars.

Therefore, in order to promote reform among those still enslaved by the legacy of Rome, I will have to make a new calendar every year just to keep up with the absurd Gregorian system that I've already left behind.

I make these calendars for you.

Samples of Fiction from The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

The women of Earth in those days were hysterical for hand-tinted photographs: they collected them like mad. Your maternal grandmother, Tomiko Panzer-Tank (your grandfather's second wife), who was Japanese, had the greatest collection of Japanese hand-tinted photographs in the world; her photochromes were also very impressive, but these were somewhat less highly regarded. Color prints were nice, but original hand-colored photographs were gold; daguerreotypes and calotypes were priceless - absolutely priceless - if they were painted, of course. If they weren't painted, they were merely interesting.

Verse 15 from the chapter called Childhood

Our most important surveillance work was in Wroclaw's Town Square, close to the Rathaus, which Jesus had thoroughly searched during our defense of the Old Town. Finding out where the building archives were, Jesus had made copies of all the blueprints for properties owned by anyone named Krupnik. One property was particularly interesting. It turned out, the Rathaus Club, a dance club in the middle of Wroclaw's Town Square (close to the Town Hall, or, in German, Rathaus), not surprisingly, was indeed owned by Leonard Cohen-Krupnik. This was the dance club which Columbus had played the very same night he met my sister's killer. It was very exclusive. Both the basement and the ground floor had popular dance floors. They were large and spacious; the ceiling on the ground floor was high enough to accommodate a crystal ball two meters in diameter. The second floor was a private lounge for private guests only. The third and fourth floors had private rooms and offices. Leonard Cohen-Krupnik was often there when he was in Wroclaw. He did business in the center office on the fourth floor. His window looked over the alleyway that went through the buildings in the middle of Town Square. From one of those buildings, our cameras looked on.

Verse 229 from the chapter called Security

At the time of her sudden death, Jesus's father was engaged in some very serious litigation - had been for quite some time. As long as Jesus could remember, his father had been poring over books: law books, books on health, books covering conflicts of law, international arbitration, personal injury cases, adjective law - the list was endless; the books were heavy and full of small print: Jesus didn't care much for them, but he knew, from an early age, that somehow they were intimately tied to his father's income, his mother's illness and his own persistent loneliness, for it seemed like those books, while keeping his father occupied for lengthy periods of time, would also send him far away, to places that Jesus would never have known existed if not for geography. Jesus blamed those books, even though they kept his father close to him, for keeping his father preoccupied. They angered him - they angered his father if they proved unhelpful or troublesome - but Jesus's anger was stronger: he hated the books for taking away his father's attention (once, his father had mercilessly spanked him for ripping out a few pages, which the young Jesus had done out of frustration for being neglected) but ultimately (notwithstanding the great pain of that episode) Jesus blamed the books for something far, far worse: a much meaner and grosser negligence. He blamed them for letting his mother die.

Verse 52 from the chapter called Adolescence

So his aunt went to get it, but there was no way she could make it. When Jesus got to the front of the check-in line, he told the Polish security guard his situation. "Don't worry," said the guard. "One time, my uncle was at the airport in Chicago and he lost his ticket. They just printed him a new one: it was fine."

Verse 94 from the chapter called Adolescence

Jesus danced. Spinning your mother around, he led her like the Sun leads the Earth. She followed like the Earth is followed by the Moon. They spun like the universe has and always will. Like the particles of life, they spun, dancing to the edge of the crossing and down the transept and into the hall. They danced onto the patios and through the porticos and down the grand staircase into the sacred forest, where the Virgin Mary was believed to have left her sacred footprint.

Verse 105 from the chapter called Vows

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

But by describing this malaise, I do not mean to imply that these people are accustomed to death - that is a good thing if they have it; my suspicion is that many of these people - and not just in the hospital but outside as well - many of these people walking around are unaccustomed to life. I'm not sure what I mean - perhaps I mean that these people are too familiar with their pedestrian existence - but no matter what I mean, I do have the feeling that many of the patients here would know what I'm trying to describe - I'm sure those people have plenty of poetry to share - but they are not in this room with me, are they? They are not locked in a room with a sleeping dead man; nor do I think they are trying to give their sisters poetry. They are trying to survive, and that is plenty poetic for anyone.

We are at a train station. Sad people are always boarding trains. I am sad. But I'm not leaving: my friend is leaving: he's taking the train: he's not sad: he's not sad at all." I looked at Nike's face, looking out the window, and, waving to him, he waved back.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 1, Cancer, Paragraph 3, Clauses 5-10

Yesterday morning Nike was sitting at my table. He was reading the Sunday newspaper. He was hunched over the table, with his elbows firmly placed. He was nibbling on his breakfast. He was wearing his reading glasses, the glasses you rarely ever see him wearing. He was chewing on his breakfast. With his free hand he was wiping the corner of his mouth with his finger.

FLETCHER: Trouble. The Tahitians were already upset. They hadn't been given any land when the island was divided, not to mention the fact that some of them were being beaten. Naturally, they started plotting. What they didn't take into account was the fact that To-ofa-iti, the blacksmith's new wife, was not complaining. The blacksmith was important. That made her important. She started singing a song, the words of which went, "Why does black man sharpen axe? To kill white man." When Fletcher Christian heard that song, he grabbed his musket, ran to the Tahitians, charged them with their crime, and pulled the trigger. The gun misfired. Two of the men ran; the rest protested their innocence. They begged for a chance to take care of it. They decided they should try to poison To-ofa-iti's husband. He didn't fall for it. He was too smart. Ultimately, one of the Tahitian men pulled a pistol on him in the presence of his wife. Again, the gun misfired. The two of them started grappling on the ground. Who knows who would've won? To-ofa-iti, however, was not about to take chances. She picked up the pistol with her own two hands and bopped her husband squarely on the head.

ALICE: She killed him?

FLETCHER: Eventually. Things were deceptively quiet for a few weeks. It didn't take long for judgment to fall upon the poor blacksmith. The Tahitians shot him down like a pig. Ironically, that's what the other mutineers thought they were doing. Being scattered all over the island, each man heard the shots and naturally assumed that somebody was hunting. Most of them found out too late that they were the prey.

ALICE: How many of them were killed?

FLETCHER: On that day, now known as Massacre Day, five of the original nine mutineers were fatally shot. Fletcher Christian was next. He was standing in his garden. Both of his hands were on his spade. He looked up at the sky and smiled. He never saw it coming. They shot him right through the heart.

ALICE: How did the others survive?

FLETCHER: Jackson was shot through the neck but he lived.

ALICE: Incredible.

FLETCHER: It's a miracle. Ned Young slept through the whole thing. The women didn't want to wake him. They all liked him and they didn't want to see him get hurt, so they stood around his hut and guarded him. Eventually, though, even he had to get his hands dirty. The women wanted revenge on the Tahitians for killing their husbands. After Ned's consort chopped off the ringleader's head with an axe, he was made to go and shoot the last remaining rebel. That was the end of the bloodshed - not counting when he and Jackson got Quintal drunk and murdered him.

ALICE: It's so barbaric.

The Body Acceptance Calendar

A really good idea for a monthly calendar

If a 45-year-old businesswoman and hard working mother of three kids is going to pose nude for a calendar, it's gonna have to be a good one. Margo didn't start a coffee shop called the Vagina Cafe to win her favors from the establishment. Even as she dishes out prizes to the 20 women who placed last in the twentienth anniversary run of her town's biggest road race, her business, unlike everyone else, doesn't get mentioned. She was an official sponsor for Christ's sake! But the announcer just couldn't swallow his patriarchy and get the words "Vagina Cafe" out of his mouth. That's not something a proper gentleman would say in front of a crowd of humble God-fearing "ladies" who cherish their modesty! And a Body Acceptance Calendar is certainly not what a humble God-fearing book-seller like a Barnes and Noble would put on their shelves! So how do I expect to sell this in the mainstream? Maybe if you download the free versions a thousand billion times it might help. Start downloading.
